PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Macquarie University a public research university founded in 1964 by the New South Wales Government. Macquarie is the fourth largest university in Sydney and has the largest student exchange program in Australia. CSU IP students enroll directly in Macquarie University, studying alongside Australian students and gaining the experience of being fully integrated into life at Macquarie and in Australia. Charity King- Sydney

Students are required to have a major (or a closely related major) in one of the approved areas of study listed above. Students will need to complete specific major or related courses in order to be prepared for the coursework at Macquarie. Students should consult the Macquarie University website for specific courses and keep in mind that not all coursework is available to visiting students and that prerequisites may apply.  For more information about the academic programs at Macquarie University, students may refer to the CSU IP Academic Bulletin for the previous year. Note that course offerings are subject to change and may not be offered during the year of intended study.

Please note that the CSU IP program at Macquarie University is based on reciprocal exchange; the number of CSU IP participants accepted into the program is dependent on the ability of Macquarie University to send students to study in the U.S. Placements at Macquarie University tend to be very limited; therefore students applying to this program should select a second choice program in Australia (or elsewhere) that also offers their area of study, in the event that they are not selected for participation in their first choice. The alternate program(s) should be noted on the “Second Choice Questionnaire,” which can be found in the CSU IP application.

LOCATION

Macquarie University's main campus (North Ryde) is located about 9 miles north-west of downtown Sydney and is set on 300 acres of rolling lawns and natural bushland. Macquarie’s campus is easily accessible by public transportation, providing students with bus, train and shuttle options to easily navigate the campus, the North Ryde suburbs and central Sydney.  The city of Sydney, which is the state capital of New South Wales, is located on Australia’s east coast and surrounds the world’s largest natural harbor and borders the Blue Mountains to the west.

HOUSING

Students arrange their own housing using information provided by Macquarie University. Some students secure housing before departure, choosing to live on-campus in residential colleges (dormitories) or the Macquarie University Village, while others prefer to live off-campus in shared apartments. More information about on-campus and off-campus accommodations can be found here.

OPTIONAL EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM

Global Leadership Program (GLP) – Students can further enhance their international experience by developing their leadership capabilities, cross-cultural understanding and international awareness through activities and volunteering. Students who attend at least four colloquia (workshops) and one GLP approved event can receive a Global Leadership Certificate (GLC). More information can be found here

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM NOTES:

Applicants must complete and submit two applications for this program: the CSUF online application and the CSU IP online application.

According to the CSU IP Academic Bulletin for Australia, "The Australian system of higher education derives from the British model, although it has developed along unique lines. In that model, general education as a component of the undergraduate degree is unknown. Undergraduate students enroll in a program of study that is relatively fixed and highly focused within the particular subject... CSU students will enroll only in courses within the approved field of study in which they are placed, following the same general plan as their Australian counterparts."
